Avalon Pier, in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is one of the oldest and best-loved fishing piers by locals and visitors alike. ... Built in 1958, it was the last wooden fishing pier built on the Outer Banks.  It is about 700 feet long, stretching out to the Atlantic Ocean over 12 to 15 feet of the water.
