Why honey doesn't fall out of the honeycomb?

Have you ever wondered how the honey stays in the bee's honeycomb?
Why doesn't it drip out?

Being fairly new to bee keeping I started asking myself these questions. Our bees started building triple layered honeycomb (that's not something you want them doing) and in order to try and discourage them from doing this, we started squashing their newly built cells. At first we tried taking the top layer off but we damaged the honeycomb and honey ended up dripping everywhere. This wasn't a huge issue as the bees would quickly fix that up but we soon realised that simply squashing the newly build comb was an easier and cleaner alternative.

So how does it stay in there without dripping out?

Bees are amazing and incredibly smart and never cease to amaze me but one of the amazing things about their honeycomb is the angle of the cells. At first glace you would think the cell walls (honeycomb) appear to be built perpendicular to the foundation but they're not. Each cell starting at the foundation is built on a 9-14 degrees angle pointing up. It is this angle why the honey doesn’t run out of the cells.

If you were to cut the honeycomb in half to view both sides you would see it forms a slight V shape. The angle is very subtle but it is just enough to hold everything in place, even the watery first nectar. Even knowing this, I still think they're amazing... it just doesn't seem enough but it works!
