I don't know why they call it a stein but it's been that way ever since I can remember but your guess about the castle sounds right! It doesn't really matter to me, I would drink it out of a styrofoam cup!
In German such ceramics are called "Steingut" (Stein = Stone in English: Stoneware - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoneware#History_and_notable_examples)

My old family van does not like to race anymore, and as you might remember, I don't drink alcohol anymore ;)
