Toy Review: Play Arts Kai Assassin's Creed Edward Kenway, Pt. I

Square Enix is known for their Final Fantasy franchise, though I am not really a fan of it. Besides the games and movies, Square Enix has its own action figure line, Play Arts Kai. Not only they release Final Fantasy figures, they expanded their licensing to other titles. Almost five years ago, they got the license for the first two games of Assassin's Creed's Kenway trilogy. One of the end results is an action figure of Edward James Kenway from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag!

The box's front cover can be opened, revealing the figure inside the box. Conveniently enough, Play Arts Kai printed a vintage map of the Carribean, which is cool! The cover flap also shows a little history on the Assassin-Templar War.

The set includes the Edward Kenway figure, four flintlocks, two cutlasses, six interchangeable hands, two pairs of hidden blades (one extended, one retracted), a folded version of the hood, Kenway's hair (when the folded hood piece is attached), and the signature Play Arts Kai stand.

I decided no to pry open the display stand's seal for preservation. ;)

The hidden blade pieces can be attached to both arms.

The figure is a mixture of hard and soft plastic and some rubber pieces.

Exclusive to Play Arts Kai, the figures bear a Final Fantasy-like face sculpt. Though, they still capture Edward Kenway's appearance in Black Flag. Here, you can see his head without the hood.

About the rubber parts, the red sash is made of one. The rubber sash is fragile enough that you can see the white marks which are actually paint chipped off.

The paint texture captures the appearance of the character having spent most his time at sea.

Here is Kenway with his weapons. The flintlocks and cutlasses are very impressive in terms of paint and detail.

I have decided to make this a three-part review, because I have so many pictures and I want to make sure you will see them all. Stay tuned for Part II!
