The Night of Ancient Bonfires

What is the Night of Ancient Bonfires?

The earliest reports of using bonfires along the sea of the coast around the Baltic Sea come from the Viking Ages, around 8th century.

The fires were lit out of necessity, to guide ships to safety or used as warnings.

In modern times, people started lighting fires along the coast to remember the old days.

It went into the masses in 2009, when bonfires were lit all over Estonia. A website mapping the fires encourages to link your bonfire, should people want to join you.

Today, the bonfires are lit once a year, on the last Saturday of August. They connect people all around the Baltics, as thousands of fires are lit on this and the other side of the Baltic Sea. They unify us and make us feel connected to each other.

This tradition doesn't have to be confined to the Baltic Sea. Perhaps next year you can join us by lighting your own fire and sparing a thought for everyone else lighting their fires around the world.
