Colorchallenge - Tuesday orange
It took a long time for the flowers on my Calendula plants to open up. The summer was dry and they were waiting the whole time, assimilated to the conditions, for better times to come. Fall rains cooled and watered them and here they are, magnificent as if they weren't living the whole summer without water (and without food, water dilutes nutrients in the soil).
This is what happens when you let the bees breed your heirloom squash varieties (local turkinja and hokkaido). Two strains were mixed with none looking like this. What happened? I'm guessing this one pulled genetics from a far ancestor, since the new pollen made the genetic makeup unstable. Others pumpkins look more like a mix between the two, which is what I'm aiming for... More about this squash variety I'm developing and info about breeding your own unique plants in new posts and experiments, stay tuned, and in the meanwhile, enjoy the late Calendulas, they certainly are a wonderful gradient of orange!
Harvest time, got to love it.
It's what all the work and knowledge is for. To set seed is the plant's greatest goal. And the heirloom gardener's goal is to have a bountiful harvest and harvest all but the best, and leave the best for seed for next year!
Yes, its the circle off life. We don't own the earth, we borrow it from future generations!
