Juan Griego, the Most Northern Venezuelan City
Greeting Dear Readers
Today I want to share some images of Juan Griego, one of the most important cities on the Island of Margarita. Settled around a beautiful bay with calm waters and located on the western coast of the island, it is the most northern town and port in all of Venezuela.

The nowadays capital city of the Marcano municipality of the Nueva Esparta State, was founded as a city in the 16th century, although there are no precise records of the exact date. Its economic activity is based mainly on tourism, where its historical and cultural value plays a very important role.

Historical accounts of the settlers, maintain that this city owes its name to one of its first settlers, a captain of Spanish ships, native of Seville, called Juan Griego that settled in the place around 1545, after being abandoned by the pirates in this bay.

From 1811, first year of the War of Independence of Venezuela, is when the city begins to gain importance, as it was enabled as a port and the Provincial Board of Margarita began construction on top of a hill, a battery named "Libertad", to protect it militarily. This fort would offer a strategic advantage by offering an excellent view of the Bay of La Galera, the town and the Bay of Juan Griego.

Nowadays, the "Fortín de la Libertad" or "Fortín de la Galera" is one of the historical sites of Juan Griego that can not be missed, as it allows the visitor to enjoy a view of the city and the beach of La Galera simply spectacular, in addition, you will have the opportunity to listen to stories from past eras, through heroic narrative poetry, recited by friendly native boys from the area.
