Climbing Herman the German (Original Photography)

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

Howdy,

The nearby town of New Ulm, MN has a strong German heritage and is home to a large monument to "Herman the German." We've had some pleasant weather (finally!) and, with little else to do, I decided to pay the monument a visit.

Ultra Wide Angle Fun
When I went the first spring week that it opens for tours, it wasn't open. Apparently, it was scheduled to be examined by structural experts to ensure that it is still safe to climb. Earlier in the summer, it was still closed. Apparently, there were issues found and repairs were under way. As of last week, though, it's open!

Don't Trip!
The "interpretive center," a room in the base of the structure, is not open. The city and historical society are taking the opportunity to restore and shore-up that area. Admission has also gone up from $2.75 to $3, which is still a bargain for the climb, view, and breeze at the top!

Very Round Room
At the top of the exterior spiral staircase, there is a large, round room with windows and another stair and ladder up to the base of the statue. It's an interesting space, and a littler surprising that there are no information plaques or artwork there. The windows, while in need of cleaning, offer a nice view of the surroundings, for those who don't want to go further.

Not To Be Confused With "Green Giant"
Herman (Arminius) was a German leader who united the tribes against Roman invaders. Wikipedia has a brief article about his life and achievements. His statue seems to have some nose hair that could use a bit of a trim!

If you're ever in this area of Southern Minnesota do not suffer from a fear of heights, I highly recommend climbing Herman's base. Then, head to Lola's Bistro for a cup of coffee and a goodie. Or maybe do Lola's first, just in case!

SO glad you didn't trip lol! Hey, is jajaja Spanish for haha? I figure you being a Spanish teacher should know the answer to that one :)
Thanks for going on another outing for a post!!

Thanks! It was an excuse to play with the ultra wide lens, and Herman and I are besties.

In Spanish, the "j" makes the English-equivalent "h" sound. So, "jajaja" is the "hahaha" equivalent. The "h" in Spanish, on the other hand, is silent. So "hola" is pronounced "oh-la." I cringe a little every time my Spanish 101 students pronounces the h like English.

Incidentally, the "h" would have been pronunced in 15th century Spanish, and the "x" would have made an English "h" or "sh" sound. This is why the wine from Jerez (Xerez) is known as "Sherry" to English-speakers. :-)

Too cool! Thanks so much for the lesson!!

It's interesting how the perspective in the top photograph makes the building look much bigger than in the other ones. I was quite surprised when I saw them. 😁

That's one of the reason ultra-wide lenses are an absolute must for real estate photographers. You can make a linen closet look like a ball room! That may be a slight exaggeration.

So was the top one taken with an ultra-wide lens @fotosdenada? Is that was caused the effect?

Most were taken with the ultra-wide, the exception being Herman's face and the last photo from a previous post. It's different from a fisheye lens in that it keeps perspective lines straight. Depending on how you frame your subject, you can exaggerate the effect. The first shot was taken from the floor, looking up at about a 60° angle.

They're fun lenses to play with, buth it can be very difficult to get lines straight when you want them to be.

La primera es impresionante 😳 ehheh not ufo but close! Great pics 😊👍

jajaj ¡Gracias!
