The New York City Highline - Part 1
When planning my trip to NYC, visiting the Highline was one of the thing at the top of my list. What is the Highline? It is an old disused over ground railway line that used to be used by the subway system. It was abandoned for years and a total eyesore.
Then a few years ago someone had the idea to turn it into a park! Now I am not sure who did it first, but there is one in Paris as well, and based on the state of each I am inclined to say the Parisian one was first and New York City got the idea from them.. not that it matters...
... the idea is an excellent one and one I hope they use in more places. It's not necessarily something that needs to be implemented on disused over ground railway lines, it could be any part of a city's infrastructure that lies disused and abandoned.. within reason of course.. you can't for example use a disused factory that has potential safety concerns.. like asbestos, unless you can pay to have it made safe..
But there are other examples of what you can do. Glasgow has a subway system .. did you know that? I didn't, until I moved to Scotland. Its a tiny system, but even it has a few disused lines and tunnels, that are now a shining example of what the apocalypse will look like as nature reclaims the cities!
But they can still be used, maybe not as a park as most of it is underground, but the tunnels could be turned into event space, flea markets or art exhibitions/galleries! Why not right?
Anyway, the highline is great, it gives you a wonderfully unique view of the city that normally you would only see fly past at speed on a train.

Love the Highline! It is a very imaginative reuse of old infrastructure.
Absolutely!
