Ice Adventure! A journey through Scotland

in #photography6 years ago

At this years Edinburgh Christmas Market there are a few new things. Annually this is a christmas fair of sorts with various rides and lots and lots of stalls filled with trinkets, booze, and food.

This year also sports an ice sculpture exhibit with a Scottish theme.

The entire exhibit is in a refrigerated tent. The whole place is kept at -10C to preserve the sculptures so you have to dress warm!

20171126-IMG_5944.jpg

Naturally the first thing you see is the Unicorn, its the national animal of Scotland you see.

20171126-IMG_5945.jpg

A celtic cross, it doesn't get any more scottish than that.

I'm pretty sure that's an eagle, check out the detail on those feathers. Really impressive!

20171126-IMG_5954.jpg

Two stags. A common sight in the highlands.

20171126-IMG_5955.jpg

The national flower of Scotland. The Thistle.

20171126-IMG_5958.jpg

Wojcek the Bear. A local hero, he a polish bear that helped allied soldier by pulling carts of ammo in the war. He retired to one of the villages outside Edinburgh where one of the soldiers he served with adopted him.

20171126-IMG_5959.jpg

A rather Dickensian scultpure.

20171126-IMG_5961.jpg

Not sure about the horses, but that's Nessie on the end.

20171126-IMG_5963.jpg

Nessie, I think this is my favourite sculpture out of the bunch.

20171126-IMG_5966.jpg

The newly built Forth Bridge

20171126-IMG_5967.jpg

20171126-IMG_5968.jpg

This is a famous statue in george square (central Glasgow) that every year the students climb and put a traffic cone on his head. It happens so often that he pretty much permanently has this traffic cone on his head.

20171126-IMG_5969.jpg

Greyfriars Bobby, the little dog that sat by his masters grave in greyfriars cemetery for 17 years.

20171126-IMG_5971.jpg

Of course, this is Scotland, there WILL be a whiskey bar. How can there not?! I loved that the bottles were in ice like that

20171126-IMG_5973.jpg

A bag piper of course.

20171126-IMG_5974.jpg

I'm not quite sure what lord of the rings has to do with Scotland, but they look cool. (ha ha, get it? 'cool' - sorry bad joke).

20171126-IMG_5977.jpg

Naturally at the end there's William Wallace too. Its a short exhibit but there is a lot of content and its impressive. I can only imagine that it takes a steady hand and great patience to make these. It must be so frustrating if you have nearly finished a big piece that's taken hours and on the last bit it suddenly breaks or crumbles. You have to be pretty dedicated I think. Worth a visit if you are in town over December!

Wow very nice Ice sculptures, this is such a beautiful art, sad that they will melt so early.

Yes, its a shame, but their temporary nature somehow adds to the beauty i think.

This is really cool (ha ha). Thanks for the pics and the commentary.

My pleasure, thanks for taking the time to read it :)

wow that place is amazing would love to visit something like that

If you get the chance don't hesitate. Ice sculptures are beautiful!

Yes I bet and can see from your post

Last time I heard of one here I had bronchitis at the time so couldn’t go

Heard there's no need for cooling of the ice sculptures this year as it's supposed to be so freaking cold in the UK right now. Great pics as always.

thanks! Its not quite cold enough for that here at the moment. The temp is hovering around 1C. They keep saying its going to get colder etc etc but it hasn't yet :)

Wrap up warm. Will be sending virtual warmth from the land where the sun still shines.

Thanks :) We really need it here ;)

Would send you some from Florida too, but we are about to land in Boston!! Brr!

Cool! Boston is a great city, enjoy!

Not our final destination, though! Heading to small town New England!

I found at the request of a friend. will follow

thanks :) and welcome!

These ice sculptures are super nice. And captured beautifully by yourself as usual.
