Seacliff Harbour - The UK's smallest harbour

Seacliff Harbour is the UK's smallest harbour and is situated along the Scottish Coast east of Edinburgh and just east of North Berwick. A popular local beach destination. The harbour was cut out of the rock in 1850 using a steam engine and high pressure water.

Over the years it has been used for the navy as a staging area and U-boat defence, during the Napoleonic wars it hosted the beach hosted a base to protect against possible French invasion..



..but now its a staging area for divers to go diving in local waters and to train. Oh, how times have changed!

You can see its a pretty tiny place, not much room for too many boats (more than 2).



Just off the beach out to sea you also have the famous (at least locally famous) Bass Rock. Its a bird sanctuary and it looks like its permanently covered in snow. Well it's not snow, there are so many birds they have literally covered the island in bird poop.

The coastline here is beautiful and its a popular destination even just for a day trip as right next to the harbour is a wonderful private beach (private just means you have to pay a £1 to get past a barrier.

Once past the barrier there is a field where you can park your car for the day (though you want to go early because it gets busy). The place belongs to a family that owns the surrounding estate and farm land which they still actively farm.

Fun fact:The family that owns this land is related to the author Robert Louis Stevenson. Most well known for his book 'Treasure Island'. If you ever are in need of a place for a beach bbq laced with a little literary history, this is the place to be.
