A photography day in the snow

in #photography6 years ago

We have an Arboretum (tree museum) near our home and I love visiting with my camera to see what I can find. Sometimes it's large, wide-shots. You can't go out on an excursion with "one shot" in mind, but need to keep an open mind to see what you can find.

Sometimes it's looking down to see what is at your feet.

While walking around, I saw some squirrels playing. One would run up the tree and another would follow. They would wrap around the tree chasing each other. Then there was this little guy who was just interested in eating nuts. He didn't mind being just feet away from me.

I tried some black and white images as well as sepia toned.

When heading back to my car, I saw this stand of trees and knew there was a shot somewhere over there. There a few ladies out taking photos as well. While I walking into the woods, one woman stood on the road and I wonder what kind of photo she got. Somehow I don't think she was looking creatively at this scene. I moved around to get just the right angle and upon reviewing them at home, I ended up throwing out several.

Here is a comparison of B&W and color. I like the color, but I also like how the sky pops in the black and white image. Share your thoughts with me. Which do you prefer?

I really like the compositions on your shots. Sometime I also like to do some excursion, but I never plan anything, I’m that one-shot type. Lol. I should be taking this hobby more seriously, I really enjoy good photography, just like you have here. Well done!

Even an hour out and about with a goal in mind will create some great photos. You might try picking a theme, like rooftops, smiling faces, or doors. See what you get. Thank you for your comment.

Picture of snow always amazes me, maybe because we don't have snow where I am. They look so serene and magical.

Congrats for your curie vote =).

Thank you. The cold, bright snow can create a very quite and serene environment.

wow @edit-or, how i hope i was there when you took the photos. The pictures were lovely and it told me Christmas is coming. I love winter seasons but unfortunately my country do not have 4 seasons. So i can only see and feel the winter season through photo. I love the marple leaf photo, it so unique, with white as background. It complement the marple leaf. What a lovely and cute squirrels. they always not afraid of strangers or only this squirrel because he busy eating :P.
I love the color photo compare with the black and white. Because in the color picture, it shows the blue sky and snow white .. hmm talk about snow white? Why no snow white princess in the photo.. wait, maybe the squirrel is the snow white? hehehhe

Much appreciated!
Many days when I have to get into a cold car, I don't enjoy the cold temperatures. But your comment has warmed me up and encourages me to go out some more and capture more images in the snow.
I think the squirrel is young and not very scared of people. Most squirrels run away sooner that this fellow.

The view were very beautiful and you knew when to capture the right moment. These were beautiful pictures.

Wow, I loved so much each of those picture, this is one of the best winter pictures I've seen, the last three especially! But, what's up with the squirrels? Did you saw a lot of them? Aren't those suposed to be hibernating or something? They're gonna get their nuts frozen there!

Hi El Franz, thank you for the delightful and funny comments. Nope, squirrels do not hibernate and will be out running around even in the coldest weather. Maybe the movement keeps their nuts warm. :)

What a nice collection of amazing shots. I agree with you in terms of creativity. People sometimes just take photos without thinking for a second about their composition and what kind of story they would like to tell with their photos.

I really like those ones with snow on the trees. It looks like it was snowing horizontally :) Very interesting. I love the black and white ones. This theme goes with snow very well.

In which country did you take these photos? It's raining in Switzerland and I'm losing hope that there will be any snow this year where I live..

Thank you for sharing!

Hi Delishtreats, thanks. Yes, this snow was blowing hard from the north, was wet and heavy, and stuck to the trees. These were taken near Chicago and our snow this year came a little early. I appreciate your comments.

My favorite photograph is of the leaf sitting neatly on the snow. I found it very curious that the trunks of the trees are full of snow, maybe that is normal and I do not know it. I am fascinated by the whiteness of the snow, it helped you a lot to capture photographs. By the way, I love how you captured the alignment of the trees you see in the black and white photo, their trunks are perfectly in line

Thank you. The heavy, wet snow blew from the north and stuck to the sides of the trees - unusual here too. (Chicago area).
I appreciate your comments.

Out of all of these, I love the squirrel the most. The detail in his tail and snow attracts me, and the color is fantastic.

For the color/BW of the last two, the sky is wonderful in the BW version. It looks very threatening and not clear as it really is. But I like the blue-ness of the trees in the color version of that one. That is the color I think of for winter light.

Thank you for your comment. It's fun to see what people think of the color or B&W versions.

such great pictures :) your creativity :)

The squirrel is cute! And it seems glancing directly at your camera. Good thing that it did not run away before can take the photo.

The lower portion of the photos almost looks the same with comparison of colored and black and white versions. I guess that tells us that nature has its way of showing its real self no matter what. 😊

Thanks for sharing your great shots!

The squirrel didn't take his eyes off of me - you know, because I might steal his nuts.

Well, clever squirrel then! It knows how to guard its food from cons. 😃

Wow your photos are AMAZING, I would like to have them on my phone or on my computer, those trees covered in snow are spectacular .. A truly fascinating post, a warm hug from Venezuela @edit-or .. !!

I'm glad you like the photos. Cool hugs from Chicago?? Nah, warm hug from Chicago. :)
