Walking Nearby #1: Palace of Princess Dorothea of Courland in Zatonie
As soon as we move to the new city/town, we start to explore the nearby. We have had quite a lot of one-day trips. I decided to start a cycle of articles about this small places we have been the last years. They will be loaded with the images and some historical facts.
The first article is about a place we had found accidentally on our way back to Zielona Gora from Korzuchow. We were driving along a park and decided to stop and take a walk. The side road ended right near the ruined palace.
The palace was build in 1689 in baroque style, but later in 1842, it was rebuilt in the classical style by architect W. Gurlt. The park was redesigned at the same time by Piotr Lenné.
In its best times, the palace was pretty nice even for Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, who visited it in 1841.
In the 1840s the palace was bought by the most famous its owner the Princess of Courland, Dorothée de Talleyrand-Périgord.
After the death of Princess Dorothea in 1862, her younger son, Aleksander Edmund Marquis de Talleyrand-Périgord, became the owner of the palace. On his initiative, the palace and orangery were reconstructed according to the design of A. Jaekel.
The palace was burnt in 1945 and was never rebuilt.
The park looks a little wild also. There is nothing left of design.
The palace is completely abandoned. Nature is taking it.
The old orangery with its bas-reliefs and columns with composite orders is the most interesting part of these ruins.
