In the shadow of people

Some years ago when in Oslo, the capital of Norway, I was visiting the Opera House, which is the main stage for the Norwegian Opera & Ballet. It's generally prohibited to walk on the roofs of public buildings. But this does not apply to the Oslo Opera House. In fact, the roof has become an attraction in it self. I spent a few hours of «people photography» but the low sun inspired me to look at the shadows of people instead.

Look at the two woman (young girls in fact) on the first photo. It is the same two women on the next two photos, One is taking photos with her phone, while her friend is posing. Then a man turns up....

The photos are taken in July just before midnight. I switched to black and white as I think it made the shadows appear more clearly.

One of the original photos

Shadows of people can be very much alive. It was first later when I looked at the photos that I saw how much alive they are and how easy it is to see how the shadows can tell a story.

The next photos were taken in Namibia, a country that has one of the hottest deserts on earth and some of the highest sand dunes in the world. These people are standing on the edge of the Sesriem Canyon. They are about to descent into it. The photo was taken late in the afternoon.

The dune on the photo above is Dune 45. This dune got it's name because it's located 45 kilometers on the paved road from Sesriem. It rises more than 150 meters above the surrounding plain, which makes it look like a giant when standing in front of it. The photo is taken at the bottom of it. Again it was almost impossible to avoid the shadows due to. the low sun. Maybe it's the moon they are looking at....or, is it three photographers taking close ups of the dune?

The original photo in colors. It was amazing to see how the dunes and the landscape around changed color as the sun rose. What do you think? Colors or b&w?
