A tribute to Antonio Canova – Un tributo ad Antonio Canova

Hello everybody,
Last weekend I had the chance to visit "Gallerie d'Italia", a museum center located in Milan, in northern Italy. In particular, I was fascinated by the neoclassical artist Antonio Canova and by the elegance of his works.

Biography

Antonio Canova is considered an important exponent of Italian sculpture. He was born in 1757 in the province of Treviso and died in 1822 in Venice.

The artist carried out the artistic apprenticeship in Venice, where he saw the birth of his first works, and then moved to Rome, where he attended the nude schools of the French Academy and the Capitoline Museum. Though Canova traveled a great deal, Rome always represented a fundamental point of reference for the formation of the sculptor.

After Canova, throughout the nineteenth century, Italy played a marginal and peripheral role in the formulation of new artistic theories and practices. This denotes the historical importance of the character.

Style

Canova's sculptures are made of white marble, the artist's favorite material, although it is not an easy material to work with. The marble used is derived mainly from Carrara, a small Tuscan town.

The sculptor's style foresees the representation of subjects as uncontaminated subjects, according to the principles of classicism: objects of an ideal, universal and eternal beauty.

Canova deals with both mythological allegories and funeral monuments.
The characteristic that is immediately evident from the contemplation of Canova's sculpture is the analogy with classical Greek statuary.

Lo scorso fine settimana ho avuto la possibilità di visitare le Gallerie d’Italia, un polo museale situato a Milano, nel nord Italia. In modo particolare, sono rimasta affascinata dall’artista neoclassico Antonio Canova e dall’eleganza delle sue opere.

Biografia

Antonio Canova è considerato un esponente importantissimo della scultura italiana. Egli nacque nel 1757 in provincia di Treviso e morì nel 1822 a Venezia.

L’artista eseguì l’intero apprendistato a Venezia, dove vide nascere le sue prime opere, per poi spostarsi a Roma, dove frequentò le scuole di nudo dell’Accademia di Francia e del Museo Capitolino.
Sebbene Canova viaggiasse moltissimo, Roma rappresentò sempre un punto di riferimento fondamentale per la formazione dello scultore.

Dopo di Canova, per tutto il corso del XIX secolo, l’Italia ha svolto un ruolo solo marginale e periferico nell’ambito della formulazione delle nuove teorie e pratiche artistiche. Questo denota l’importanza storica del personaggio.

Stile

Le sculture di Canova sono realizzate in marmo bianco, materiale preferito dall’artista, sebbene affatto facile da lavorare. Il marmo utilizzato è derivato prevalentemente da Carrara, piccola città toscana.

Lo stile dello scultore prevede la rappresentazione di soggetti come esseri incontaminati, secondo i principi del classicismo: oggetti di una bellezza ideale, universale ed eterna.

Canova si occupò sia di allegorie mitologiche sia di monumenti funebri.

La caratteristica che si nota subito dalla contemplazione delle sculture di Canova è l’analogia con la statuaria greca classica.
