Trip to France - Part 8 - Strasbourg Cathedral

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

Once settled in Strasbourg, we immediately left our apartment to visit the city. This is when we tried to get the Batorama boat tour but it was full for the remainder of the day.

As we recall, the ticket booth is relatively close to the Notre-Dame Cathedral which became our first tourist attraction. It had just started to rain, so this was the perfect shelter.

The Church immediately captures many people's attention with its rich details and splendid facade in a kind of Gothic or medieval style. We recall it was free to enter but there was a 5 euro fee for those who wanted to get panoramic view from the top.

We had just arrived, so we choose to focus to the details of the Church. There are many interesting points inside the cathedral, first the famous astronomical clock. According to Wikipedia, the clock was built in the 18's and is one of the largest in the world.

The legend states that the creator had his eyes gouged out by the master after completing the creation. This was done to prevent him from reproducing it anywhere else. However, similar legends are told from other clocks around Europe, such as the astronomical clock in Prague.

We like legends but really hope no one got hurt for creating this masterpiece. Overall the clock is really beautiful and the details are amazing.

All the rest of the church is also really breathtaking, the paintings, the artistic stained Glass and the very structure of the church. There are some small shop inside to buy some souvenirs if you have a budget for that.

Such a beautiful creation @dejan.vucovic! Thank you for sharing :) I really hope the legend is totally made up too, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't!

@dejan.vucovic enjoyed your photos...only wish there were a couple more.

Odds are strong that people got hurt on a project like that. Safety wasn't really a real issue back then, but the legend seems really over the top. Then again, who knows...interesting either way.

Lovely photos! France has some interesting scenes... but the French people are not the kindest people I've met.

PS: I've found you after @zorank featured this post in his entry for the Pay It Forward Contest

unusual photos! that's what came to my mind when I saw the pictures before I read your story and I'm trying to count the figures on the second photos.. LOL, But every masterpiece has an ironic story behind the process, though sometimes it was told to attract more people, but I believe that the story about the creator is not made for attraction anyway. thank you for sharing your story with us.

So that is the famous and majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral. The cathedral has indeed splendid facade! I wonder how many people it can accommodate. Is it divided by storey or just like mezzanines? Have you got the chance to get close-up shot of the clock? Maybe you can share here too.

Thanks for sharing your visit to the Cathedral. Keep blogging!
