I am, sadly, or fortunately, way too desensitized due to the internet. I don't think that I would feel anything but intrigue in this event, and your pictures sure seem interesting.
I don't think I'd ever participate in something like this, not even remotely. Every time I make a mistake, I think of solving things for the future. I try not to regret and I don't look much toward the past, even less try to punish myself in any way for my wrong choices.
Self punishment in this form is denounced and condemned by the Catholic Church in the area. They moved the event to a different location for them to be able to perform the act. Punishment on one's self is not a solution but sadly we cannot make the choices that people make in life.
