Nature Flash #1 - Monarchs Need Milkweed

in #photography7 years ago

Seeing a monarch butterfly in Central New Jersey has become a somewhat rare treat. And it appears that a dearth of milkweed is one of the main reasons.

Just several decades ago they were a much more common sight.

Excerpt from Milkweed in suburbs and cities could restore monarchs: Posted by U. Arizona July 10th, 2017:
North American migratory monarch populations east of the Rocky Mountains declined by more than 80 percent over the last two decades due, in part, to the loss of millions of milkweed stems in the northern United States.

Milkweed is the only plant that provides breeding habitat and food for monarch young, but because adult monarchs feed on the nectar from a range of flowering plants, the US Fish and Wildlife Service recommends planting both milkweeds and nectar plants that are native to specific areas. Adverse weather conditions in recent years, loss of overwintering habitat, disease, and exposure to contaminants have also contributed to the monarchs’ decline.

Living out in the woods, we have a lot of monarch butterflies. I never saw them living in the city. I've never seen milkweed before but have heard of it. Neat plant.

Apparently, milkweed is vital to survival of the monarch butterflies. We have quite a bit of it in the fields and meadows here in Central Jersey, but I rarely ever see a monarch.

Oh no! Any ideas about what happened to the milkweed to make it vanish? Interesting post @cognoscere- thanks!

Looks like one culprit is the herbicides sprayed on GMO crops that are resistant to the herbicides, whereas milkweed is not!

That breaks my heart for the butterflies and for us.

looks like it extinct, btw nice pic

Not yet, but it's not heading in the right direction.

Hi DoGe friend Monarchs Butterfly ^^

Bluebirds used to be under a lot of threat, too. Until folks started building a lot of well-deigned birdhouses. I hope folks grow more milkweed. It is pretty enough to have in a garden!

Milkweed used to be so common. When I lived in Michigan, I ate a lot of the young shoots, but there was a lot of it back then - a weed! It's delicious -- better than asparagus, I think.
