Feature Photography: Tine Poppe, 'Winter Solstice' collection

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

Tine Poppe is a Norwegian photographer whose art focuses on bringing attention to social, political and environmental issues.

Her recent Winter Solstice series, featured by Lens Culture , is focused on the environmental impact of global warming from a distinctly Norwegian viewpoint, yet captures a truly relatable human plight that all denizens of the world are finding of more and more importance with each passing season.

In the words of the artist, Tine relates:

Norwegians no longer worship the reawakening of nature around winter solstice, but sadly, rather the opposite. As the world wrestles over what they should do to keep the planet from heating up to dangerous levels, Norway remains one of the biggest oil producers in the world and hesitates to curb the expansion of its (profitable) oil and gas production. Meanwhile, raging wildfires, once-in-100-years storms, and lethal heatwaves have become part of the everyday news. And throughout the once dark wintertime, cars, lights, and furnaces burn, casting a haunting glow…

The hazy grays and fog littered atmosphere in many ways reminds me of the foggy lens the government here stateside takes when disseminating information or discussing climate change.

When lobbying money goes further than scientific data, it's difficult as a young american to be at all comfortable in the present political climate, with feelings that the future is being sold for the present becoming more and more commonplace.

Tine's images capturing a similar line of thought in a country as progressive as Scandinavia's Norway reminds me that we are all linked in this plight and it is the hope that we will all continue to strive for change through awareness, activism and dialogue.

Living in a capitalistic society presents many unique horrors and challenges, and I'm hopeful that globally we are all striving to make the changes needed to make the world a better place.

Tine Poppe's 'Winter Solstice collection was named a Finalist for Cameraworks Street Photography Contest.

Her work, along with the work of the 36 other selected photographers, will be exhibited at SF Cameraworks, a non-profit gallery space in San Francisco supporting emerging artists, November 11-18, reception on November 15 from 6 - 8 pm.

pls don't use the @ecotrain tag unless you are a passenger, many thanks!

apologies, good sir, I was told by another that this post should be tagged as such due to the content without truly knowing the meaning or seeming importance.

i only joined the steemit platform a few days ago and did not realize that tags were exclusive clubs or somesuch similar designations via tags - i will do more research in the future so that i don't make the mistake of using exclusively owned tags.

thank you for the head's up! & all the best to you, Alex.

its all good, thanks for explaining.. we know how it is so no problem! you can use any tag that is popular but indeed, some people use them to organise things.. thanks a lot!

These are truly wonderful images. I could and probably will stare at them for hours. I would like to promote this post, but I do not see any indication that you have authority to use Tine Poppe's photographs. If in fact you have implied or explicit permission please let me know ASAP.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Hey @catweasel, thank you so much - i have updated the post to reflect that i received an email response from Tine (through her website) expressing her approval to use her images for promotion of her feature and her gallery exhibit. my apologies for not including earlier.

i have absolutely no issues forwarding the correspondence your way if you would like verification, good sir, please let me know - and thank you for helping promote Tine's art! it's so striking and i know she much appreciates and completely deserves more eyes on her thought provoking work.

All the best!

That is perfect. Thank you.

I noticed you only used about half the photos in the series. If we can get some attention with this lot would you like to do the rest in 2 or 3 days?

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Dear @carmalain7,
Thank you for sharing the gorgeous work of Tine Poppe, along with touching on the larger implications of constantly available light and heat. I see a connection to @geke's recent post regarding sustainability, capitalism, and corporations profiting off pollution.

Thanks for mentioning my sustainability series. I'm hoping to point out to people that it isn't living in a "capitalistic" society that's creating these problems. The market forces of capitalism would do a lot to curb problems like this. Rather, it's government policies pushing consumption and protecting polluting companies that create these problems.

100% agree and an important piece of the puzzle that we need to keep in mind - thank you, @eyedreemit and @geke.

@geke's article is linked here for those interested - it's a great read and certainly relevant to the topic, with a greater focus on specific policies and putting your support in the right processes to get results!

Congratulations @carmalain7! You have completed some achievement on Steemit and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :
