PORTRAITS OF ISTRA - Episode 7 - IN THE TOWN CALLED VODNJAN
Vodnjan, with its 3800 inhabitants - give or take a few, definitely isn't a big town ...
... but ...
... since all the town is one old and compact urban structure ...
... with narrow streets ...
... pretty large buildings ...
... a solid number of old interesting medieval churches ...
... there is a sensation of being in a much larger old city ...
... you can easily get lost ... I mean, not literally :D is not that big ...
... just figuratively ... you can get lost in the abundance of details ... or in your thoughts and imagination ...
... while walking ...
... through this picturesque labyrinth ...
... I walk these streets very often ...
... because Vodnjan is not far from where I live ...
... just 20 kilometers ...
... and 10 kilometers from Pula, the largest and most important city on the peninsula ...
... although the territory was inhabited from ancient times ...
... the first written traces of the town date from the year 1194 ...
... and the most important ...
... and most visible ...
... town's characteristics ...
... where shaped between the year 1330 and the year 1797 ...
... during the Venetian Republic administration ...
... this is definitely a Venetian kind of town ...
... and today ... is a bilingual town ...
... as you can see on this funny and peculiar example ...
... on the town's elementary school ... where the word '' Elementary" is written in Croatian and the word "School" in Italian language ...
... the school itself is a remarkably cool and colorful building ... :) looks pretty funky, like a disco or something, from a distance ...
... and all around the town ...
... you can find ...
... many large, well thought and well executed, examples of really beautiful street art ...
... it's a very artsy and art friendly old town ...
... with many interesting visual surprises ...
... many beautifully varied art styles ...
... waiting at almost every angle ...
... I made all these photographs ...
... in three short (an hour or so) photo excursions ...
... during this December ...
... and I was amazed by a seemingly never ending stream of photogenic vistas, details and motifs ...
... an obscure little sotoportego leading to a small circular open space between the buildings ... early in the cold December morning on this photograph ... with a bit of warmth from a yellow light in the window ...
... the same place later in the day ... always with the same walking frame ... telling its part of the story ...
... a doll in the window of a little store ... with the reflection in the glass, so the town looks like growing behind her ... all melted in a lovely ... and pretty believable illusion ...
... the unusual window ... or combinations of windows made in different periods ... on one of the bigger church in town ...
... a view at the line of palaces on the main street ...
... a small movement of focus and the whole camera ... and the same view expands ... and tells a story about the people chatting on the street ... while the night is approaching ...
... an old, ww 2,or soon after the war, graffiti ... evoking the Red Army ...
... a bigger sotoportego with a cool view ... at least for those like me, who like a bit of decay on their pictures :D ...
... the lovely street lamp ...
... that looks like lit by the sun in the late afternoon ...
... the view at the 62-meter-high church tower of the main church, visible from almost everywhere in town ...
... the church itself ...
... the church and the tower together ... posing for the post :D ...
... a saint on the church's rooftop ...
... another saint, praying on the same roof ...
... and then ... another one ... the third one ... The Third Saint ... sounds a bit like a fairly cool title for a movie or something ...
... on this photograph The Third Saint is coupled with a distant plane ... and the picture has some sort of vague symbolism ...
... I met a lovely white bird there ... we stopped and had a little chat ...
... " There are more saints than pigeons up there, man ... ain't that Strange? " - she said ...
... this cat was napping by the warm sunlit stones of the church tower ...
... enjoying the lazy afternoon ...
... on the church's facade, the minuscule insect, was seemingly doing the same ...
... and on one of the nearby palaces, what I thought to be some sort of rusted metal object ... turned out to be ...
... a millipede ...
... in one of the many little alleys ...
... I spotted ...
... a colorful bunch of cats ...
... and talked for a while ...
... with the man who lives upstairs in the building ...
... he was on the window ... with a cigarette and a bottle of beer ...
... it was like talking with this town's version of me ...
... I felt completely at home there ...
... an interesting house :) ...
... with a slogan ...
... one of the many small churches ...
... a succulent plant on someone's window ...
... detail from the municipal palace's facade ...
... the same detail ... more in detail ...
... a neighborhood that looks like a small rural village inside the bigger town ...
... and that's probably what it is ... while the town is spreading, the small rural areas around it get assimilated in the urban structure, and often don't change much in their appearance ...
... some cool looking chimneys in that area ...
... a very, very cool combination of door and sotoportego passage ... creating some vague undefinable prospective illusion ...
... a look at the dark and creepy abandoned house ...
... another window ...
... another door ...
... another traditional stone building ...
... light in the window ...
... another street view ...
... and than another ...
... and another ...
... a Pizza - Grill place :) ... and a lovely facade ...
... another picturesque neighborhood ...
... the palaces are standing around a garden ... or some sort of little park ...
... another street view, This one from the frog's prospective ...
... another look at the town's center ... a building on the main square ....
... and another one of those ...
... another pretty ordinary view at one of the small side streets ...
... and now ...
... with the last look ...
... at one of the many ordinary late afternoons in winter ... is time to end this little excursion ... have a good day ... or night ... wherever on the planet you are ... as always in these posts on Steemit, The GIF and the photographs are my work ... THE END.
