Have you ever heard of the Old New Year?

This oxymoron very taken root in Russia. Literally, it means New Year according to the Julian calendar (old style).

The fact that for many years Russians celebrate New Year twice a year. It's hard for me to explain the details in English, so I quote from Wikipedia.

The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar.

The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar.
Although the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic officially adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. The New Year became a holiday which is celebrated by both calendars.

As in most countries which use the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Day in Russia is a public holiday celebrated on January 1. On that day, joyous entertainment, fireworks, elaborate and often large meals and other festivities are common. The holiday is interesting as it combines secular traditions of bringing in the New Year with the Christian Orthodox Christmastide customs, such as kolyada.

The New Year by the Julian calendar is still informally observed, and the tradition of celebrating the coming of the New Year twice is widely enjoyed: January 1 (New New Year) and January 14 (Old New Year).

Usually not as festive as the New New Year, for many this is a nostalgic family holiday ending the New Year holiday cycle (which includes Eastern Orthodox Christmas on January 7) with traditional large meals, singing and celebratory drinking.

So today I would like to dedicate a post to New Year's photos last time this year...

I was walking in a city park late at night and I was pleased that the park was decorated for the New Year. It looked very beautiful in the light of colored highlights and streetlights.

It was freezing and the snow crunched loudly underfoot. Rare passers-by ran past. We can say that the park was empty. And nobody prevented me to photograph ...

I hope you will like it!

I think i vaguely remember hearing about old new year but didn't come across my mind as Russian. 2 new years are not so bad. like we have Chinese New Year. more reason to celebrate. I heard in India, there are many more different new years they celebrate too.

When I was writing this post I learned that there are many countries celebrating second New Year by the Julian calendar. And I know about Chinese New Year. As in all countries of the eastern horoscope addicted, even though we do not celebrate but always know the date of the Chinese New Year. This year it will be January 28th.
I agree with you. It is nice to have another reason to celebrate something 8))

Yeah, I like it too. Thank you @shieha! 8)

Neat colors!

I Would love to walk on these streets!
