Spain Travelogue || Cordoba

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

This is the story of my backpacking tour across Spain in the month of August 2017, the is the third part of the blog.I traveled across the Andalusia region of Spain - started off with Caminito del Rey walk followed by Seville to Cordoba to Granada to Murcia to Valencia to La Tomatina festival back to Valencia and then to Barcelona. If you are interested you can check out the first part :Spain Travelogue || Caminito del Rey and the second part of the blog : Spain Travelogue || Seville. In this part I will take you visually across the beautiful Andalusian city of Cordoba. We took a Refne train from Seville to Cordoba, we were not supposed to stay in Cordoba. We reached Cordoba at around 10 AM kept our luggage at the bus station which is opposite to the train station were we had to take our evening bus to Granada from. We booked a hop on hop off bus tour. It is a beautiful roman city with Moorish history. Our main reason for visiting this city was its Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. It used to be a cathedral that was dedicated to Virgin Mary, but when Muslims conquered Spain in 711, they turned the place into a mosque and rebuilt everything. Then when Islam went lost during Reconquest period, they turned the place back into a cathedral, until today. Please find below so pictures of this beautiful city:

This is a beautiful laid back Spanish city, one needs to take it slow and let the history and culture soak in. Next we visited the place whose history had awed me for a long time and the pictures of it's architecture that I had seen made it one of the main reasons for this Spanish sojourn .According to a traditional account, a small temple of Christian Visigoth origin, the Catholic Basilica of Saint Vincent of Lérins, originally stood on the site. In 784 Abd al-Rahman I ordered construction of the Great Mosque, which was considerably expanded by later Muslim rulers. Córdoba returned to Christian rule in 1236 during the Reconquista, and the building was converted to a Roman Catholic church, culminating in the insertion of a Renaissance cathedral nave in the 16th century. Please find the pictures below and let them do all the talking from here on:
