Red Odonates    

Mientras que en la cultura occidental los odonatos muchas veces fueron vistos como dañinos y hasta diabólicos, en el oriente sucedió algo muy diferente con esta bella especie de insectos a los que pertenecen las libélulas.

En el hinduísmo se afirma que el alma de las personas que mueren van a esperar dentro de una libélula su próximo renacimiento o reencarnación. En Tahití se creía que los insectos, incluidos los odonatos, eran mensajeros de los dioses y espíritus. Pero mi preferida es la relación de los japoneses con las libélulas.

Recién ahora supe que, entre los disímiles nombres que tuvieron las islas del Japón, uno de ellos estaba relacionado con estos insectos. En algún momento el nombre del antiguo Japón fue Akitsu Shima (Las Islas Libélula), por la aparente similitud de la geografía nipona con estos insectos; tal vez también por la abundancia de ellos, que suelen pulular entre los campos de arroz, pues necesitan el agua para su reproducción.

While in western culture the odonates were often seen as harmful and even diabolical, something very different happened in the East with this beautiful species of insects to which the dragonflies belong.
In Hinduism it is stated that the soul of the people who die will wait inside a dragonfly for their next rebirth or reincarnation. In Tahiti it was believed that the insects, including the odonates, were messengers of the gods and spirits. But my favorite is the relationship of the Japanese with dragonflies.
I just now knew that, among the dissimilar names that the islands of Japan had, one of them was related to these insects. At some point the name of ancient Japan was Akitsu Shima (The Dragonfly Islands), because of the apparent similarity of the Japanese geography with these insects; perhaps also because of the abundance of them, which tend to swarm among the rice fields, because they need water for their reproduction.
