Caged Owl
This little owl broke my heart. I saw many like him, nearly every day I was in Varanasi. Along with green parakeets, they were for sale – carried in these cramped little cages – feathers clearly damaged from struggling in too small a space.
This particular day was my birthday. I dreamt of freeing him, but knew that he'd just be swooped right back up again. Instead, I hung out next to him a while and tried to calm him. The vendor thought I was crazy as I cooed and spoke softly to him – I was alright with that.
