Muskox watching #3 - Only one - but big and old!

In the last part of the story we will walk a bit through vast, open landscapes of Devrefjell national park in search of MuskOxes - creatures with fantastic, original look, which really great fits to the look of the surrounding environment, very old one, almost ancient creatures, living freely in just few places in Norway.

Continuing the story - after fast breakfast and some morning shooting, we went by car to the parking place near the beginning of the trail. Footpath leads us directly towards high mountains in far horizon, not very hard to reach but in this time of the year - very wet, muddy, partly covered with melting snow and ice, wish I had better boots that day.

I was really surprised that we saw the first animal just after reaching the first hill top. Never seen Muskox so close to the main road. The reason of such situation can be few - very little tourist traffic this time of the year and the fact, this one animal was alone. In my opinion it is old male who no longer belong to any herd... not sure about that, but just look at him - very long hairs, long horns, massive body - definitely a male, definitely not the youngest...

We focused our actions to get little closer to the animal. He spotted us very fast but was also very calm and didn't run away...just watching our direction if we are not getting to close.

That day was cloudy, light was soft but also quite flat. That wasn't the best conditions to shoot but it was our only chance because in few hours we had to go back to Trondheim.

We stayed some time with this fellow and after - went further the path to reach the nearest high hill, from which we will have a good overview to the plateau. I used my binooculars to scout the area, @sawyn had his 600mm cannon ;).

Unfortunatelly we didn't find any herd nearby - so the decision was only one - heading back to the car. It was windy, cold, wet, we were still quite tired after short night in the tent and we were very much limited by time.

In our way back we met again the same male, he was walking among the stream feeding on the freshly uncovered vegetation.

Shooting these creatures is an amazing experience, that is why I am going to do it in a commercial way - to show others how great these animals are and to have an oportunity to be in Dovre mountains more often.
