Buzzzzzz! Pollinators and Native Plants in MinnesotasteemCreated with Sketch.

in #photofeed7 years ago

Exploring my sister's backyard looking for native plants, I spotted a busy bee. Working on landscaping projects in my neighborhood, my intention was to support pollinators and cultivate native species. Native plants are important in creating sustainable landscapes. Most have root systems that grow deep and wide, holding soil in place and slowing runoff into nearby bodies of water. The plants also absorb chemicals, reducing the amounts that enter our water sources.

Another positive characteristic of native plants is their support of wildlife, including pollinators and other beneficial insects. Pollination is vital for the growth of both foods we eat directly, and crops we harvest for countless ingredients. I transplanted about a dozen plant species native to Minnesota from my sister's suburban yard into the city, beginning two projects in South Minneapolis. With the official start of Spring, I'm looking forward to watching them grow and bloom. I'd love to hear about your experiences with native landscaping!

YESSSSS! This screams, MEEEEEE!" I've bought Beez Kneez honey at a bike shop and have seen them pedaling around the city hauling trailers of honey. Bikes and bees, what's not to love? This photo makes me want to visit their place even more. Thanks so much for sharing this :D
