Merida - Parque de la Madre

Just down the street about a half a block from Parque de Hidalgo is Parque de la Madre. This park is dedicated to motherhood as you can see from the statue.

In 1909, the Liga de Acción Social (League of Social Action) recommended building this marble replica of the original statue in Paris, France and placing it in what was then Parque Morelos. The piece was completed in October of 1928 and the park became Parque de la Madre.[1] [2]

Immediately behind Parque de la Madre is the Rectoria el Jesus Tercera Orden (Church of Jesus Third Order). Between May of 2017 and May of 2018, the church is celebrating its 400th year since the inception and the beginning of labor on building the church.

Parque de la Madre isn't a large park but it almost always has a few people sitting around somewhere in the park. It seems to be a favorite of young couples sitting in the sillas tu y yo (you and me chairs), who knows, possibly discussing starting a family.

On the other side of Parque de la Madre is Cafe Peon Contreras which you can see in the background of this photograph. Cafe Peon Contreras is a great place to end the evening. A quiet place to sit and have dinner or maybe a drink or two with some appetizers after a day of shopping and sightseeing.
