Picking Huckleberries + Thoughts on Family Traditions
Picking Huckleberries
Huckleberry season is a highlight of mine every year. Sometimes referred to as Purple Gold, these berries pack a punch of flavor, blending sweet with sour in a dynamic little bite. They grow anywhere from 2,000 to 11,000 feet in elevation making the season for harvesting extended over a long period of time if you're willing to go to the elevation where they are ripe. Last year, I took my daughter for the first time to a small patch with easy access for a three year old. I was amazed at her stamina, and we happily picked for an hour and a half, gathering nearly two quarts in that amount of time!
Do you have a family tradition that is special to you? I'd love to hear about it in the comments below.
