In the last post about our Helgoland-trip we described Helgoland roughly. Here are a few more important and interesting facts. Helgoland has about 1500 inhabitants. They are called "Halunders" and they even have an own language which is also called "Halunder". These days German is the most spoken language. With some tourists you have to talk in English.

Im letzten Beitrag über unsere Helgoland-Reise haben wir Helgoland im Groben beschrieben. Hier sind noch ein paar andere wichtige und interessante Fakten. Es leben ungefähr 1500 Menschen auf der Insel Helgoland. Die Helgoländer werden auch Halunder genannt und sie haben auch ihre eigene gleichnamige Sprache: das "Halunder". Aber heutzutage wird fast nur mehr Deutsch gesprochen, mit den Touristen auch Englisch.

A few hundred years ago Helgoland played a bigger role in Germany and in the whole world than it now does. Even the island is that small, it has a lot more history than many other areas. If you want to read more about the history of Helgoland click here: (Artikel kommt morgen)

Früher spielte Helgoland in Deutschland und in der ganzen Welt eine größere Rolle als jetzt. Auch wenn die Insel noch so klein sein mag, sie verfügt über mehr Geschichte als viele andere Gegenden. Mehr über die Geschichte Helgolands findest du hier: (article will follow tomorrow)

Helgoland has three height levels. That has to do with the formation of the rock, but also with the war. The "Invasorenpfad" connects all three levels. There is also an elevator which connects the upper level "Oberland" with the lower level "Unterland". Generally Helgoland populous. The alleys are not really wide. Even more interesting is the fact that Helgoland was rebuilt in a competition after it was bombed in World War II. The result is really special. The city was rebuilt so that you can't see from one end to the other one even it is so small. Everything was built twisty this is called a closed construction. By the way, the buildings are protected as historical monuments.

Helgoland besteht aus drei Höhenebenen. Das hat zum Teil mit der Entstehung des Felsens zu tun, und auch mit dem Krieg. Der "Invasorenpfad" verbindet alle Ebenen. Es gibt auch noch einen Lift, dieser verbindet Oberland und Unterland miteinander. Helgoland ist im Allgemeinen dicht besiedelt. Die Gassen sind nicht sonderlich breit. Was aber noch interessanter ist, ist die Tatsache, dass Helgoland nach der Zerbombung im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Rahmen eines Wettbewerbs wieder aufgebaut wurde. Das Ergebnis ist aber etwas ganz Besonderes. Die Stadt wurde so angelegt, dass man trotz der kleine Größe nicht von einem Ende ans andere sehen kann. Alles wurde verwinkelt gebaut, das nennt man eine geschlossene Bebauung. Übrigens stehen die Gebäude unter Denkmalschutz.

Helgoland has its own hospital, a school, a fire department, a rescue station, a police station, a power station and much more. Actually there is almost everything there. There is a graveyard and even two churches, various restaurants, shopping and leisure activities. The over 300 000 tourists are offered a lot. For them there are more accommodations than needed and lots and lots of options to spend their holiday.

Die Insel verfügt über ein eigenes Krankenhaus, eine Schule, Feuerwehr, Rettung und Polizei, ein Elektrizitätswerk und vieles mehr. Eigentlich gibt es ziemlich alles auf Helgoland. Es gibt einen Friedhof und sogar zwei Kirchen, zahlreiche Restaurants, Einkaufs- und Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Den über 300 000 Touristen wird also einiges geboten. Für sie gibt es mehr als genug Unterkünfte und Aktivitäten.
