Sun-kissed Summit

Mount Whitney, USA

Seen from the Alabama Hills (in California), at the moment that the pink sunlight brightened the face of this distinctive mountain.

There's something about jagged mountain peaks...why do these etch themselves in our memory so much more than rounded ones? And why, when we draw mountains, do we draw them with pointy, triangular tops? Can you tell me?

Another fantastic shot @derekkind . I believe Mt Whitney is the highest mountain in the lower 48, and a pretty decent hike to the top. I've only seen it from a distance, but that side of the Sierra's is very impressive.

I believe you're right. It's funny because while it's an extremely photogenic peak, it doesn't feel particularly prominent when you look at it from the ground, probably because of how impressive the rest of the range is, as you say.

It reminds me on my home country Slovenia a bit...
Great shot!

In that case I need to visit Slovenia!

Off topic, but I don't often get to talk about Slovenia and you've written "Sports Fan" in your profile, so you might appreciate this story: I was volunteering at the cross country course at the Olympics in 2010 when Petra Majdič won her miracle bronze with broken ribs and a punctured lung. I've never seen or heard about anything like it before or since in sports. I took a photo of the podium (this was before I was a photographer). Incidentally, right after I took this photo I happened to talk to a guy there who had a DSLR, and I remember it as a moment when I first started thinking "I should get one of those". So maybe my photography career started here? Haha!

What an amazing story of you becoming such an amazing photograph!
I am glad that you even know Slovenia. It really is a beautiful country...
That bronze is worth of diamond medal! That was literally unbelievable. Congratulations to Petra one more time and thank you for sharing such an amazing story, now I am even your bigger fan :)

I'm sorry though, I know very little about Slovenia - only that the capital is Ljubljana and that you have mountains and an unusual number of good athletes for a country that size (even a decent hockey team - Anze Kopitar has been one of the best players in the NHL in recent years).

We didn't appreciate the extent of Petra's injuries when the event was happening - only knew that she had suffered a bad fall in the warm-up, and it was clear she was in a lot of pain - had trouble standing on the podium. To race three times after that and to come third in the final within two seconds of two of the fastest skiers ever in women's cross-country....unbelievable is the right word!

Nice mate. Craggy peaks are my favorate . It’s just the raw power they present (resistant to even erosive forces). Love a good alpenglow as well.

Yeah, maybe that's it! There's power in sharp things. Thank you!

Perfect colour balance!
I think of something like Mt Cook in NZ which has a triangular shape when I think of mountains

Thanks! Yes, Mt. Cook is a nice respectable-looking mountain!

Mt Cook is an amazing mountain. From the Tasman sea there is a narrow coast plain about 15km wide, then Mt Cook rises very steeply up nearly 4km. If you get a clear day it is an awesome sight.

I need to go there!!!

This photo is beautiful! <3 I love the colors so much! it's perfect, great job

Thanks so much, @drupi! :)

Wow those colours are so intense, just stunning! I can't imagine seeing moutains this big!

Have you not visited mountains like this, @vtravels?

Not this big no! I used to live in Snowdonia, in Wales, but the mountains were a lot smaller than this, but still very nice!

That's awesome! Because I'm sure you'll see big mountains some day, and when you do, you'll be in for a treat. Like reading Lord of the Rings for the first time!

I hope so! I can imagine I would probably just stare at them for hours without taking any photos haha!

Speaking from experience, I don't think you'll go five minutes without taking photos. ;)

Haha your probably right!

Lovely shot :) You're right, this is just what I think of when I think of mountains! Mind you, I guess it's also because the typical snow capped mountain is used so often in pictures!

Thank you! And yes indeed! But why, exactly, are we drawn to that type of snow-capped pointy mountain peak?

Haha I see we have a chicken and egg scenario brewing here!

What did the mountain say when it crossed the road?

I have absolutely no idea, interested to see where this goes!!

It said "AVALANCHE!"

Haha I actually thought it was pretty good, although my epectations were low given the rather odd start to the joke!

Wow that alpen glow is just exploding of that beauty. Great comp man.

Thanks man! :)
