OVERGROWTH - Abandoned city of Skrunda

in #photofeed6 years ago (edited)

This week we are moving to abandoned city of Skrunda-1, also known as Skrunda-2, is a ghost town and former Soviet radar station located 5 km (3 mi) to the north of Skrunda, in Raņķi parish, Latvia. It was the site of two Dnepr radar (NATO "Hen House") radar installations constructed in the 1960s. A Daryal radar was being built there before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Skrunda was strategically important to the Soviet Union as its radars covered Western Europe. The two barn-like radars were one of the most important Soviet early warning radar stations for listening to objects in space and for tracking possible incoming ICBMs

It is the most complete example of an abandoned communist-era secret city in Latvia today. Now, after 20 years of decay, Skrunda-1 is entering a new phase of its history. This year the government paid €12,000 to a private company to buy back the town, and announced plans to return half to military use and lease the rest.

During the cold war the Soviet Union created more than 40 secret settlements, usually for military purposes. They were given code-names – a number and the name of a local town – and formed the technical foundations of the Soviet armed forces.

Images of Soviet ghost towns are largely associated with the Ukrainian town of Pripyat, built to house the workers at the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Sticking to the weekly theme of "Abandoned shit contest" now presenting mostly the photos of OVERGROTH. While the most interesting is to see left houses (including kindergarten, post office, concert hall and so on....).
But that's for the next ASW contest weeks, so stay tuned :) And enjoy!

Great post, I have been in Skrunda long time ago just to visit one girl for a day, it was short relationship from distance. I didn't know that there was military object. Thanks for shearing photos of my country.

Thanks, very nice pictures.

Do you know why they wouldn't develop this town and rebuild it now?

I don't believe so it could be renewed and become useful for living. Last news that was idea to make it the place for training of NATO forces, that's more realistic scenario IMHO, counting the politic situation in Baltic States right now

It's sad somehow. In the USSR, my youth remained. And such places return memory in that epoch (no matter what assessments it gave). Thanks for the post and photo, friend.

I guess lot of people still have some kind of nostalgia about that epoch...
