Behind the spikes

I have mentioned in my previous post that the Esplanade's spikes are inspired from a fruit ~ Durian. Even though that this fruit has a reputation as one with a “pungent flavor”, it is one of the most consumed fruit by the localities.

The building itself resembles the physical characteristics of Durian; the shape and its prominent feature “the spikes”.

You might wonder, what are these “spikes” for? The basic explanation is that, these spikes are responsible of allowing light to enter the interior of the building while preventing the heat from getting in.
