This guy is using the compact's perceived weaknesses to his advantage. Clever!
Cool stuff! But, these articles on him tend to make a big deal about the fact he's doing it with a low-end point and shoot. That's actually part of the "trick". Those cameras have very small sensors, lower resolution, and deep depth of field that's a characteristic of small sensor cameras.
These would actually be much more difficult to do with a full-size, larger sensor digital camera.
Most people try all kinds of tricks to try and get shallow depth of field (when the zone of focus is very shallow) out of a compact camera, but this guy is using the compact's perceived weaknesses to his advantage. Clever!
