The blunt version of any rule we apply around here — in our family and beyond — essentially amounts to "don't be shitty."

The problem with many of these old rules and truisms; often religious/spiritual in their roots, is that they ignore situational ethics. And situational is precisely what makes the "platinum" (or any other rule) make sense: the individual situation dictates our conduct, subject to the idea of (a) don't be shitty and (b) be conscious and awake enough to be aware of the active dynamic of an interaction.
