THE LAW OF KARMA AND AN EYE FOR AN EYE

in #philosophy6 years ago

There is a law that says what goes around comes around. So many people, the world over, hold this law to be unbreakable. They claim that it is as final on earth, as the law of gravity. This law, the law of karma, is so revered that people live their whole lives, striving to do good just because they believe that they will get good in return. How true this is, is a matter for another day. Is the law of karma universal? Is it unbreakable?

Politicians in my country are notorious for corrupt practices. They are known for their lies and lack of empathy for the lives of the people they are supposed to govern, protect and speak for. These men and women make astounding amounts of money, preying on the ignorance and misinformation of the public.

It has gotten so bad that the people no longer care as to who is in power or what he or she is doing to help the community, he or she came from.

People go about their daily lives, as if there is no government representing their interests. They show no interest when election time comes, or when issues are being discussed in the House of Assembly.

Why is this so? Well, they have accepted the fact that this is the status quo. They have accepted that the political class will continue to pillage and destroy our nation. They have accepted the fact that whoever goes into politics does not go because he or she wants to bring about change in the country, but because politics is the quickest way to riches.

If the law of karma is in place in the manner in which most people claim it is, then it stands to reason, that people who cheat others of their rights will get their just rewards. It stands to reason, that if a man steals from you, he would find himself a victim of thievery. But is this so?

You know of men and women who have lived their lives oppressing the poor, denying the rights of their community, defrauding the ignorant. Are they paying back as your idea ofthe law of karma demands? Yes some are but not all of them and not enough of them. So is the law inviolate? Can the average man depend on this much touted law to take revenge on his behalf?

Some will say the courts, the justice system can protect and defend the average man from such criminal elements masquerading as saviours; but who runs the judiciary? Can we really depend on a justice system that is as corrupts as the politicians?

Have you not heard of young men being arrested for crimes they know nothing about, in order to protect the name of a big man’s child who is the actual culprit? So many people are in prisons today who still do not know what they had done wrong.

Let us talk about love. So many times, a man finds he is no longer in love with the beautiful lady he had sworn to love forever. The lady, thinking the man was hers, had invested her time, talents and resources for his wellbeing and now he seeks a different hearth to rest his heart.

Have you not heard these girls go out naked under a full moonlit night, to place curses on such men? How many of these curses come to pass?

Some of these men marry and move on with their lives while the girl continues to live in the darkness of her broken heart and so spoil every opportunity to love again.

Some of us sometimes refer to the subtext of this law that speaks of the curse or retribution being transferred to the children of the man or woman who had dared this law’s unction and of the aforementioned transferred curse being active until the third generation.

If this is so, what about the man who had lived his life, helping the poor and needy, giving his wealth out to the sick, taking care of every monetary aspect of his immediate and extended family’s life? How many times have you heard that when the man died, everything he had labored for disappeared? How many times have you heard that the very people he had helped and gave succor to when he was alive, abandoned his family at his death?

Am I saying that the law of karma is breakable? No! I am saying that the universe is more subtle than we take it to be. I am saying that we should not mistake the law of Moses for the law of Karma. An eye for an eye is not a rational law. What if the woman had no eyes before she took yours?

The law of karma does not give back to you what you gave out, the universe is not that kind or shallow. if it was, the effort you put into hardworking would yield the same proportion of return in wages or harvest.

You will receive your harvest but unlike the planting and harvest of man on the soil, if you murder with a gun, you’d probably die on your bed, grey and pale, with your grandchildren squabbling over your property.

There is no particular guide to how the law of karma should be but it is definitely not an eye for an eye or he who lives by the gun, dies by the gun. Sometimes it plays out so, but most times you just have to watch the cause of your pain indulge in debauchery and cause other people more pain without being able to do anything about it.

We as human beings, have our whole lives ahead of us to make our lives better, to be happy, to be better than we were yesterday. We will face hard times, wicked men and women, brutal events and we will overcome them… or not... but at the end of the day, how we live our lives is our choice. What we make of the obstacles, the hurts and pains we have faced is our choice.

Dwelling on the hurt in the past will not cause the cause of the hurt to die. It will not make God descend in vengeful fury on the person and wipe out his whole lineage as he did in the Old Testament.

When you prayed for the politician to die from January until December, and you started 2018 only to find the man still staring at you from the pages of newspaper, dressed in an expensive attire and showing off his new wife and beautiful kids; how does it make you feel? Do you feel like God did not hear your prayer?

Or when the girl who took your virginity, emptied your account and ran away with your best friend passes you on the street driving the latest Benz series, do you feel like the universe has not heard your cry?

If you feel like this, it is because you expect them to face what you have faced; to reap exactly what they have sowed and this is not the law of karma. The law of karma will not become Moses’ law to please you.

Why? Because the universe always leave room for change, for adjustment, for balance. The man who killed your brother is a murderer to you but he is also all a blind mother has. She prays for him night and day and begs the gods to protect him from evil. The boy who made you pregnant and abandoned you is the hope and salvation of a group of motherless babies somewhere. Without him, that home would close down and those babies will end up dead or worse. The universe does not allow vacuum and every man or woman has a place, a function, a need to fill.

You will get your rewards for your actions; be it good or bad but it will not come from where you expect or how you expect. It will come but you might not even recognize it as the universe answering your plea. It will come.

Today I looked back on so many times that I have expected the law of karma to hit hard but I have been surprised. I have come to realize that what you expect and what the universe gives are two different things most times. If you expectations fall in line with the universal plan, then indeed you have scored a hit, but never expect it. Be about your business, which is living well to the best of your ability; expect nothing. What will be will be.

AIRDROP! AIRDROP!! AIRDROP!!!

I hope you enjoyed my foray into philosophy. there are so many questions that seek answers in our world. I have managed to draw attention to one. I hope you have answers.

The space is where I will be giving glimpses of my daily life. This is my blog right? Well I am going to treat as one.

Today I posted a poem. I had planned on making three posts today but I ended making two. I will do better tomorrow. I have to. I was supposed to do some business today but I just could not lift myself from the sitting room chair. I am procrastinating again.

Good news or bad news, I have no clue yet but I am travelling to Abuja this weekend. Any steemian out away should holla at me, so we can talk shop a bit. I need to leave the nest before I go native.

I am still excited about the second set my poems going up on africanwriter.com this month end. Great things just keep happening. God is faithful.

That's all for now. See you tomorrow.

Peace

To me it seems that karma is just way for us to cope with things when bad stuff happens to us. It gives us a thing to blame and hope for.

This was a really interesting read. Some points you've made are easy for me to accept and some a bit harder but it is a text worth reading and thinking about. Thank you for sharing this.

Great write up you have there @warpedpoetic. Keep it up!

I don't know what to say about this. I saw people who are a true bastards being plastered with good fortune and riches, and I saw the most honest, loving and caring person being treated like garbage and ultimately ran poor and sick. I don't think that karma is there, it is only a wish in my opinion.

It is there but it doesn't come the way we expect it. There's no an eye for an eye... Don't expect to get free money because you gave money to a homeless man on the sidewalk. You will probably get a gift of roses that day or not. You decide the value. The fact is evil and good comes to all whether we do good all our lives or not.

I sincerely love that quote:

you reap what you sow

It is a fact, and so true!
@warpedpoetic, you doing a great job..... Keep steeming

Thank you. Do we always reap what we sow? Have you ever reaped what you sowed?

I have,... Both in d positive and negative side.
But, i just want to keep sowing gud seeds so i can reap gud posts!

"Politicians in my country are notorious for corrupt practices. They are known for their lies and lack of empathy for the lives of the people they are supposed to govern, protect and speak for."
That is true of politicans in every country in the world, and seeing how they operate and how very seldom any of them faces justice, it is my opinion that Karma doesn't exist or work, or it only gets you in another life, which would make it imperative that reincarnation be a fact.

Hmm... Or that it does not work the way we expect it to. For truth being said, is there a man or woman without a private pain?
