Slump towards Animalism
The Cynic "life according to nature" was a slump towards animalism and a retrogression from civilization. When Diogenes learned to eat his food from a hollowed out piece of bread he was no longer dependent upon a platter (D.L. 6, 37; 13th Letter of Diogenes). Seneca says; “How, I ask, can you consistently admire both Diogenes and Daedalus? Which of these two seems a wise man- the one who devised the saw, or the one who, on seeing a boy drink water from the hollow of his hand, forthwith took his cup from his wallet and broke it, upbraiding himself with these words, 'Fool that I was, to have been carrying superfluous baggage all this time,' and then curled himself up in his tub and lay down to sleep" (Epist. Morales 90, 14; Cf. D. L. 6, 37; 6th & 13th Letters of Diogenes). Here Daedalus represents progressive civilization, Diogenes a repudiation of it.
