Attitude of the Cynics Towards Pleasure
The attitude of the Cynics towards pleasure seems to have varied at different periods, probably also with different individuals, and our information of it contains inconsistencies. The professed object of the early Cynics was happiness. Julian says, "Their (Diogenes and Crates) main concern was how they might themselves attain to happiness" (6th Oration 201). "Many, when they hear of a short cut leading to happiness, seek happiness like us in philosophy" (12th Letter of Diogenes; cf. 30th Letter). "Telephus concealed himself in this form of life in order to gain health, Ulysses did so in order to kill the suitors who had wronged him, I that I may gain happiness " (34th Letter of Diogenes).
