We all have, at one point in time of our lives wondered

How did the world come to be?

Sometimes, our curiosity pushes a little bit further –

Who is God?
How is the idea of an all knowing, all seeing God even conceivable?

In an attempt to answer these questions, most of us fall back to Religion or Creationism. Others to Science or Evolution and a larger number are perhaps, indifferent or in denial.
Well, we’re not the only ones to search for a deeper truth about the world, if that makes you feel any better.

Philosophical tradition – Plato, Aristotle, Epicur, as we would see have given it their best shot.
Before now, I am seated in the middle row of a church gathering, listening to the pastor giving us the message that supposedly came down from God. This pastor believes in Evolution as it were. That man’s walk on earth has been in three dimensions:

  • Homo Habilis,
  • Homo Erectus, and
  • Homo Sapiens.

He also agrees with archeological evidence that dinosaurs once walked the earth. However, he is at odds with the BIG BANG Theory
A theory that seeks to explain the world in scientific terms. It’s proponents hold that the universe came to be as a result of an expansion, then an explosion and thus the stars and galaxies were formed.

Plato believed that the world which we see – the birds, the trees, mountains and rivers in all its beauty and splendor is not real but a copy of the “real” world. He called this real world the world of “ideas.” Plato described our world – the earth upon which you and I thread, as “matter” or a canvass whereby all the ideas in the real world are transferred. But who transferred the mountains, and seas from the world of ideas to our present world? Plato called him a “Demiurge”or architect. This architect transferred things from the ideal world to our present world. Plato does not tell us where the Demiurge or architect comes from. This was how Plato thought the world was created.

Aristotle, being a disciple of Plato believed in the world of ideas. But as it is with all renegades, he decided to think differently. Aristotle argued that Plato’s world of ideas and our world (matter) pretty much existed together. He taught that our world is the real world. This real world came about as a result of constant interaction between ideas and matter. This interaction was caused by motion. But who caused the motion? Plato’s Demiurge or architect? Aristotle called him the “Unmoved mover”.

After the era of Plato and Aristotle, there arose a group of people called the Apologists. The Apologists were still concerned with the big question of the day – how did the world come to be? In a bid to answer this arduous question, the apologist tried to reconcile Greek Philosophy with religious tradition. One of such men was Philo. Philo agreed with Plato that the world which we see is not the real world but a copy from the world of ideas. He however placed this world of ideas in the mind of God.
Philo taught that several spirits radiated from God as light would from a lamp. One of these spirits, the Logos worked on “matter” and in so doing our world was created.

These were some of the basic ideas of early philosophers.
This leads to my next question

How do we see God?

A magician perhaps, who in a bid to thrill the heavenly audience wakes up one morning, stands on the podium, and with a wave of his wand shouts let there be light and somehow, out of nowhere, the whole stage comes lit and a round of applause echoes from the audience?

And as if that were not enough, he goes ahead to separate the skies above from the grounds beneath and receives a standing ovation?

Well, you won’t be far from it. But every magician has his trick. What was this great magicians trick?
The Big Bang Theory perhaps?

That the universe expanded as a result of high density and high temperature and boom! Now we have the galaxies, the stars, and planets as they are?

Do I believe in the Big Bang Theory?

Certainly.

Like Philo, what I’ve attempted to do is to reconcile science with the religion of the time. That the Big Bang is a veritable explanation for the activities of Plato’s Demiurge or Aristotle’s unmoved mover.

Sort:

Very nice put! Philosophy is rather a upscale term rather than a definition nowadays. It literally defines who you are by what you think and no one should judge except your own mind.

That is how we get blueprints of devices and architectures: by meditating the thought of needs and services to those needs and then by evolving the idea within the "real" world with practical appliance. That's what blockchain could be if its done right.

Yeah, i truly agree with you.
