We assume too much

in #philosophy6 years ago

As I've gotten older, I've grown to value my privacy a lot more. Maybe it comes with age, maybe it's just me, but the mental process is undeniable. It's probably because of this, that I wrongfully think that everyone values it as much as I do.

I mean, it takes but a little bit of research to see that most people don't care about their data, the key word here being "most". If they did, they would act different, would not check into places on Facebook, tag locations on Instagram, etc.

If you ever have a conversation with someone who is complete fine existing while being watched like this, you will also find out that they are comfortable with the supervision, because don't feel they are doing anything wrong anyways.

I think the default position is to see the whole crypto-privacy proposition as a tool for illegal activities, but the simplified thought fails to account for other very palpable truths.

Have we not heard of people being fired for a tweet? Being tarred and feathered for sharing a video even? All of the sudden, social media became an invitation to judge, and I for one can't accept nor understand how people do.

My suspicion these days is that, most will only come to crypto, when there are sufficient projects that look like crypto, but offer none of the philosophical ideas we particularly value.

In other words, there is only a handful of us who appreciate privacy, self governance, censorship resistant platforms, etc, and maybe the idea of an anarchist world is too utopian for it ever to become a reality.

well there is also the flipside to this. give your enemy what they want. if they think you are a known quantity because you post puppies on FB, they wont be looking at why they cant find you elsewhere. thats my theory anyway...

And you may be 💯 correct there

I agree with refusing to being watched. But at the same time, as an Airbnb host, the first thing I do is to find the person on FB and see who they are. If I see a profile with everything hidden, it really raises the flag for me. Same thing is done by job recruiters.

I am not advocating for this practice, but the question I'd like to ask is that, maybe, in the times we live in, it is more suspicious to hide stuff?

Or is it that the tools at hand are changing the way we perceive our social relationships and activities overall?

To be honest, I began to pay more attention with privacy after entering the crypto world. Many people believe that telling them where they are and what they are doing is no problem since they, as well as several people do the same.
I particularly never checkin or post where I am in my Facebook or Twitter posts, because privacy is something that I really care about today.

I believe you're right, @meno. There are plenty of people who won't care about privacy because they think they've achieved some kind of social status, or because the convenience of communicating what they're doing with family and friends across great distances outweighs any kind of surveillance that might be going on.

However, the folks tend to be ones who just don't realize the dangers (the young and the famous tend to have similar traits—they're not aware of their own mortality or vulnerability yet). Those folks, though, tend to grow up, and after a few hard knocks, get to see what the real world is shaping up to be like.

So, while I don't expect the world to change overnight, or even in the next five years, there's a growing number of us here who are moving in the direction of cryptocurrency for what it stands for beyond internet money. I think there's more of us out there, especially in countries where the freedoms and resources are limited or doled out by the elites. Those folks are showing up in greater numbers.

It's the rest of us who have been lulled into a false sense of security in the western industrialized world because we're relatively affluent, even in our so called poverty, that will need to be jolted awake. I think the circumstances necessary to do that are coming. Hopefully, it won't be too late for people to wake up (though it probably will be for most).

Perfectly put glenal...

Yes indeed Roberto. Basically the "stigma" will have to eventually fade away as a larger portion of society rather just be part of the large machine and not worry about privacy and self governance, whether they realize or even admit it.

As we well have learned “ignorance is bliss” until you learn. I recall having a colleague around 2015 that to that date had never purchased anything on the internet or sign up for email. We all laughed at him and even though it was an extreme I think the last laugh is on us as the number of privacy vulnerabilities have been scary over the last two years.

I struggle to agree that most people do not care about privacy. I think that most people, if you were to ask them, would say 'yes. I care about my privacy.' I do agree that there are people out there that simply do not care, but I think the real disconnect comes from people not truly understanding what constitutes being public anymore. I think most people are stuck believing privacy to be a purely physical phenomenon; a traditional view of it.
