Getting Out Of A Rut
the options are endless!
There are some ways that I don't mind repetition when it comes to establishing a “rut” with my daily life, as far as my route to work goes, or where I do most of my grocery shopping, or how I pay my bills, there are some habits that I am content with and not eager for them to change. But other things I would like to change.
For example, I don't always want to go for walks on the same streets in the same neighborhood, I don't always want to cook the same meals, or get caught doing the same thing every weekend etc. Does it always have to be the same old dinner and movie combo? Whether it is learning a new song on the guitar, trying a new food dish, or taking part in an activity I've never done before, there is always something new to learn or to do if you take the time to look for it.
I don't mind the comfort of a routine, but I think switching things up and taking the chance to go and try new things can keep life fun and exciting.
experience something new.
Setting goals can also be a quick and easy way to get out of a rut. They can be short term goals like going to do something new for date night on the weekend, or trying a new hairstyle, or they might be long-term goals like moving to a new city perhaps. Setting goals is a quick way to pause and reflect on something that we don't have yet which we might want to experience or attain in our lives. And it can prompt us to consider what there is about our life that we might want to change for the better.
Not settling into routine is also really healthy for your brain, as far as I heard. After some years of settled life, and walking around my big city (of Moscow, Russia), I feel that I've seen most that it has to offer, walked over most of its streets, and while it is changing in recent years... It just doesn't cut it for me.
I prefer to spend time in other places. And while all cities are quite similar. They do have their own quirks and character, but for me the similarities are greater. Anyhow, even with all those similarities, it takes some time to learn a new place. And then I can move again and again. It is pretty nice, especially in the way that it makes you lose the cruft that tends to gather around you if you spend too much time in one place.
Love the last quote "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone". I was interviewing a colleague recently who's career doesn't follow any conventional patterns and his advice was "When you're comfortable in your current job. It's time to move on to something else. And it doesn't have to be up your current field." Love this advice.
Nice one! My life feels like a drag always. It's really hard to change something. It's like a mental battle each day. I want to break free, but rarely do.
I'm gonna do more!
