We Live in a Hologram

in #philosophy7 years ago

This should not come as a surprise to anyone, since it is common knowledge that we experience reality via our brains firing of neurons which we experience as one of our 5 (or is it 6) senses. This however, has many interesting consequences that we ignore or take for granted. I'm going to outline 3 that are of interest to me.

A. Time
since our brain take in reality and projects it to us, it is conceivable that short periods of time do not necessarily unfold in the manner they are observed. There will always be a lapse of time between when an event occurs, and when it is observed. This is because it takes time for your body to deliver the message to your brain. If you see an event, then it has occurred slightly before you have seen it.

This may give some people an advantage. If your brain is faster than another persons, you may have an advantage in sports, or activities that take quick reaction times such as driving etc. It may also be possible to improve this through practice. I.e. males that grow up playing sports and video games that rely heavily on reaction time, may be better than others at observing reality quickly.

But this is not the only consequence. Perhaps more interesting is the order of events. We always observe time as going forward, and events as unfolding in a forward direction. This, however, may be a result of our minds organizing the raw data it receives and presenting it in an order that is easier to understand. It is however possible, that at times time and events don't move forward. We would be unaware of this events as we would not experience them. But it is possible that events like having a de javu could be the result of time unfolding in the wrong direction. That is, we experienced the end result before the we experience the beginning so our brain re-writes the order, but in the back of our mind we already know what's about to happen.

B. Unseen Events/Objects
if we are viewing reality through a holographic projections that our brain creates, it is conceivable that certain events or objects may be absent from our existence. If an event or object cannot be expressed through the coding our mind has (basically 0/1 on/off... neurons firing or not firing), they would be absent from our existence. Or more accurately, they would be absent from our observed existence. We may be able to sense these things in the back of our minds, but never be able to interact or view these events and objects in the form that we are used to.

For example, if an event exists outside of time, our brain may not be able to project it due to limitations to the number of dimensions we can experience.

C. Control of our Reality
if we experience things as a hologram, it would be plausible that we could learn how to change some of the script that governs the hologram. I.e. turn pain on/off, turn perception of time on/off, turn off all filters etc. This would theoretically require some learning and training. But if one were able to learn to control ones mind, it is plausible that one could effect ones own reality. If you were feeling cold, you could turn off your perception of temperature for the time being. This would not change the reality that it is cold. But it would make you unaware of the cold.

Time is learned and useful to explain action sequence. Imagine the possibilities of training oneself to think outside of time as a tool for reality control. I've often tried to think of hot chocolate when it's cold outside... sometimes it helps. :)

As a child I used to have dejavus all the time. I spent some time focusing when they would occur, and they started to occur more often and get longer. I then would see if I could change them, but as soon as I deviated they would end. So I started deciding if I would want them to continue... it was pretty cool. I would be playing a sport and know if a move would work before deciding if to use it. Wish I had continued exploring it...
