Benzodiazepines Types:

• Lorazepam ( Ativan) - Is a long acting Benzodiazepine and one of the strongest. Has a long half-life so once or twice a day dosing is normal. It is also used as anesthetic for pre-op sedation. Also used to stop seizures and may be given IV push. Must have resuscitation equipment ready in case of respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, or cardio vascular collapse.

• Alprazolam (Xanax)

• Diazepam (Vallium) - Given IV to terminate seiures. IV push no faster than 5mg per minute and have resuscitation equipment ready in case of respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, or cardio vascular collapse.

• Oxazepam (Serax)

• Clonazpam (Klonopin)

• Clorazepate (Tranxene)

• Chlordiazpoxide (Librium) - Also used for alcohol withdraw. This one may be crushed for easier swallowing.

Antidote for Benzodiazepines:

Flumazenil (Romazicon) - A Benzodiazepine antagonist.

Also used for Anxiety:

Antidepressants - Some antidepressants may be used for anxiety.

Advantage - Less likely to cause cognitive or motor performance problems and rarely interacts with other CNS drugs. Less potential for dependency.

• Buspirone (Buspar)
• Dexmedetomidine (Precedex)
• Eszpiclone (Lunesta)
• Ramelteon (Rozerem)

Barbiturates - Some barbituates may be used to treat anxiety. However, these are so dangerous they are rarely used.

• Phenobarbital (Nembutal)
• Secobarbital (Seconal)
• Phenobarbital (Luminal)
