Kitty Tips - Caring for Cats in Winter

Summer and spring are but distant memories and the autumn leaves have been swept away, the colder months of chilly winter have finally started to set in. It’s a great time to stay home with our beloved cats, snuggling together where it’s safe and warm. Today we will be looking at care during the Winter months!

Keep Your Cat(s) Indoors

Cats do not enjoy being subjected to cold weather, it might be evident by their habit to curl around radiators or other heat sources. They dislike windy and chilly temperatures that the months of winter brings and inside will be much warmer and friendlier for your cat. If you’re considering letting your cat explore the winter lands, perhaps to even get an experience their first snow day, be aware of risks that are present when introducing your cat to environments filled with cold air and moisture. Several ailments can occur due to sudden cold exposure including chest infections, join aggravation and others. So let your cat stay inside during the cold winters, a warm and nice cat bed may be just the purrfect way to snuggle safely at home.

Sun Exposure

Everybody needs a little sun and cats are no exception. Sun exposure is responsible for natural vitamin production in the body for both humans and animals. Allow your cat to bask in the limited sunshine through a window if possible. Daylight hours are limited during the winter months and it’s a good idea to draw your curtains and let some sun in the house to promote vitamin D production. Avoid feline rickets and osteoporosis and let your cat feel happy and warm.

Control Your Cat’s Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet is important to keep your cat’s immunity in check. Providing vitamin supplementation is a great way to increase nutrition in take in addition to their staple diet. You might choose to split feeding times throughout the day and consider adjusting serving sizes if your kitty is feeling a little lazier during the colder months. You can use a smart pet bowl with weight display functionality to accurately measure your pet’s serving sizes.

Cats can really pack on the pounds during the winter, you may need to actively encourage your cat to exercise through play time. You can use cat toys, cat teaser wand, etc. to interactively play with your cat, a fun and effective way to keep your cat active.

Stay Hydrated

Winter is known as one of the drier seasons of the year and cats can neglect their drinking needs sometimes. Dehydration leads to all kinds of diseases, especially within the kidney and urinary tract. Encouraging your cat to drink water isn’t easy but should be priority. It’s best to counter the risk of disease during the cold and dry winter months through enticement. Even the most difficult of cats who don’t like drinking from bowls will be drawn to a Cat Water Fountain as it provides a continuous flow of fresh clean water that can be sipped throughout the day. We recommend finding what works best for your cat and stepping in if they drink little to no volumes of water.

Adequate Ventilation

Airflow is important during this vulnerable period when immune systems are at a low. Prevention of illness is paramount during this time and air quality can contribute to this tremendously. Fresh air is key, a mini air purifier may also be added in close quarters to your cat’s resting place so provide better ventilation and odor removal.

Look Swag and Keep Warm

We adore our cats fur coats and admire them in their natural form but in extremely cold weather a little extra might be needed needed to keep your kitty warm. If it’s really cold or you have a hairless cat such as a Sphynx, slipping on some warm and comfortable clothes will be a great way to defeat the cold. Be sure to consider your cats response to wearing clothes, if they appear to be stressed or displeased by the feeling of wearing clothing, don’t force them. Calmly remove the clothing piece and seek alternative arrangements to heat the living environment instead. Meow! 🧡
