Petals Contests: #flowers - Virginia Blue Bells
Virginia bluebells are actually ephemeral wild flowers. An interesting property that these flowers posses is that its little pink buds contain cells of colored sap (anthocyanin) and as the emerging flower readies itself for pollination, they actually increase their alkalinity in order to change their pigmentation from pink to blue. The color blue being more attractive to pollinators!
From the perspective of photography, I learned something different from this flower. I often go after the 'flower itself' as the main subject and focus of the shot. However, it is early spring and there was a lot of pollen floating around as well as quite windy. Those beautiful big, lush vivid red and purple flowers were covered in pollen and shredded by the winds. I was forced to photograph flowers that I am not normally drawn to - the more understated flowers.
When I pulled this photo up, I was quite surprised by its watercolor painting type quality. The greens and blues with the little splashes of pink complemented each other so well that I may have to open my eyes a little more to those more understated beauties living in the shadow of their more 'showy' companions.

Great "chance" photo decided by natural circumstance (pollen); from this "greater" distance we really get a feel of context and family, as the delicate, splattering and green carpeting of this bluebell is accentuated. The celeste and cerise of these flowers work wonderfully poking out through a papery bed of the brightest green. A sense of spring abundance in all its fragile grace. Glorious.
Such a different one to the typical English woodland one, which also is always best captured in carpets of it.
