The name of the gladiolus flower comes from the Latin word "gladius" - this is what was called a short Roman sword. And the leaves of the gladiolus look like a sword. In Ukrainian, this flower has another, very sweet-sounding name - "kosaryky", which comes from the word "kosa", which means the spit and again hints at the form of the leaves of the plant.
Назва квітки гладіолус походить від латинського слова "гладіус" - саме так називався короткий римський меч. А листя гладіолуса схоже якраз на мечі. Українською ця квітка має ще одну, дуже милозвучну назву - "косарики", яка походить від слова "коса", що знову натякає на форму листків рослини.
