Venus Flytraps (Dionaea Muscipula) are native plants of the East Coast of United States and North and South Carolina; thriving in sub-tropical areas. These carnivorous plants catch their prey (mainly insects and arachnids) by using their unique trapping structure which is formed by the terminal section of every leaf.

This action is triggered by minute hairs found on the inner surfaces of the leaves and individual traps contains six trigger hairs, one on each lobe. Venus Flytraps actively seek insects not for pollination purposes but to feed on. They need the nutrition from the insects as the soils they grow in are nutrient poor. Small frogs are also digested when available. After 4 to 6 catches, the trap withers, turns brown and falls off.

After two stimulations of one hair the trigger activates the trap. Once an insect is trapped, it takes approximately ten days for the digestive process to be complete. It is then in a position to re-open its trap. These plants require up to 14 hours of sunlight per day but they are dormant for 4 to 5 months of the year.

Venus Flytraps can be propagated by seed and will take up to five years to mature and if cultivated with the right conditions will live for 20 - 30 years. They are the most recognizable cultivated carnivorous plants and are popular household plants. Large quantities are grown for commercial markets around the world.
