گیاه داروش غالباً یک انگل تصور می‌شود، درحالی‌که به معنای واقعی کلمه انگل نیست، زیرا هیچگونه مواد آلی از میزبان خود نمی‌گیرد، بلکه فقط آب و املاح مغذی را از شاخه‌هایی که مکنده‌های خود را در آنها فروبرده است، استخراج می‌کند. (توماس فیشر، گیاه، ج. ۲، ۱۹۸۹)
