Faith - Peoplephotography by worldcapture Week #30
This is my entry for the Peoplephotography Contest hosted by @worldcapture.
The photo was taken in the Umayyad mosque in Damaskus, Syria. This mosque is one of the most magnificent buildings of Islam and one of the most sacred buildings in Syria. Worshipping on this site, dates 3000 years back to the 9th century BC, when the Aramenians built a temple to their god, Hadad. When the Romans came, Jupiter became the god of the temple. Then a church was built here and Jupiter was ousted from his temple. The church was dedicated to the John the Baptist, who's head is said to be burried here. Then Islam arrived in 708, ordered by Khalifen al-Walid. It is a beautiful mosque where it is easy to spend many hours.
