We have a couple of Tamarillo trees growing in our garden, aka Tree Tomato.

These small trees are not very strong, and we believe this is why the Vervet Monkeys that troop through our garden daily foraging for food have not bothered to pick the fruit, as the branches are too weak for them to climb on, so thankfully we have one fruit bearing tree that does not get scavenged as the birds also do not bother eating it.

This fruit is believed to be native to the Andes of Peru and also Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia, but is now found in many other countries as well.

Tamarillo has many health benefits, and I quote:

Tamarillo health benefits includes managing diabetes, preventing cancer, boosting metabolism, supporting eyesight, preventing anemia, supporting weight loss, treating tonsillitis and supporting cardiovascular health. Other benefits includes enhancing the skin, boosting immune system and supporting digestive health.

We do have giant Papaya trees and leave the higher Papayas for the birds and the monkeys, these are super sweet.

Tamarillo is absolutely delicious - the taste reminds me of a Granadilla (or Passion Fruit) mixed with a Guava, but the pips/seeds are softer, almost like Tomato pips.

The Tamarillo can be peeled like a Tomato by blanching it first in boiling water and then in ice cold water, the skin just peels away so much easier then.

One can use them to make jam or a chutney, in fruit salads and even in baking. I will be making a Tamarillo & Apple Crumble for you today.

@bingbabe says she's never seen Tamarillo, but as a native of the Philippines knows Guava and Papaya (as do I). Now crumble.. don't get me started... its a kind of weakness with me.

Those are all such delicious fruit @slobberchops, and as for a crumble, it's everyone's favourite. Hubby's on Keto (cruel wife to make a crumble) but I made him a passion fruit low carb cake in a mug so he was happy as well ;) Thank you for your lovely feedback, I hope you get to eat a Tamarillo one day, they are so delicious!

I would never have thought of combining tamarillo and apple, such an interesting combination and looks so good as a crumble

It was really delicious in the crumble @tattoodjay, thanks for stopping by :)

I bet and my pleasure to visit 😎👍😎

Ok. Tamarillos look like tomatoes, even when you cut them open. I assume they don't taste like tomatoes though -- because tomato-and-apple crumble sounds ... odd. Frankly.

LOL, nothing like a tomato, that would be absolutely gross in a crumble! If you've tasted a passionfruit or even a guava, you could imagine the taste of it, it's a mix of those two flavours.

Oh I love a warm crumble! Especially with such a neat new fruit! I've definitely never had Tamarillo before. Looks like something I would love to try, though that's not a surprise since there's not many fruits I don't enjoy!

I wish you could taste it @plantstoplanks, it's really so delicious. Thank you for your lovely comments :) I also love all fruit!

Unfortunately, I do not know this fruit, but it's fantastic!

It is such a delicious fruit @proanima, thank you for your comments!

You are living in a paradise Lizelle!!! It must be amazing to have all these fruits, wow. Our tamarillo from the supermarket is tasteless, so I do not bother buying it anymore, lol. I wish I could try one from your tree and also your delicious crumble. Oh my goodness, I imagine how would melt in my mouth, lol. Great job my Dear 🌴🥭🌴

What a pity about the shop bought Tamarillo, they're probably being harvested too early! I wish you could taste a ripe one freshly picked. You are so right @lenasveganliving, we are blessed to live here in our own little paradise :)
That Crumble did not last very long ;) Thank you for your lovely comments!

Most definitely they pick them too early, just like everything else. But I guess some fruits are okay that way and some are not. Ans I am not surprise the crumble didn't last to long, lol.

Always a pleasure my Dear 😍

Another lovely treat here. Looks so yum! Pictures are beautiful @lizelle. What an interesting fruit, never heard that yet, But thank you for introducing it, a must try😊

It really is delicious, thanks @sherylneil!

Looks like an interesting crumble to make, have never seen the tamarillo sounds interesting Lizelle.

I got a couple of trees from my uncle in Pinetown, it thrives here and starts bearing quite early, it's really delicious!
Thank you for your lovely comments @joanstewart!

This looks so good, Haven't had Tamarillo's for ages, what a great combination apples and tamarillo's. might have to try to hunt down some tamarillo's to give this a try.

It really goes so well with the apples, I'm so glad that you have tasted this fruit, I'm hooked on it, and gives that little extra flavour to the crumble!
Thank you for your lovely comments!
