ARRRRRRGHGGHGHGHGGH!!!!!!

in #parenting5 years ago

I'm guessing that pretty much every parent knows what these combs mean... it is back to de-lousing the hair of our children again. It feels like this is a losing battle, as it is something that the whole school needs to be rid of. If one kid has it, then it is bound to break out again... sadly enough, we know that there is at least one family in the class of our older child that just doesn't care that their kids have hair lice! So much for communal thinking!

Anyway, as you can see... these are our combs of choice. Actually, the one on the left (the red TERMINATOR!) is the best one... the other one is a bit of a cheap knock-off and it really shows when you are using it. We now have a fairly regular regime of tea-tree oil hairspray to help repel the lice, and some other shampoos and conditioners to break down their shells and egg glue.

However, this week, the week before school returns, we deicided to have one day with the nuclear option (the poison shampoo). This we don't do too often, as it is quite tricky to do, especially with the little one. Plus, the lice start to get resistant if you use it too often as well...

Patient Zero

We believe that this is the source of our lice ingress. She goes to a school (well, that is pretty much enough!), but in addition she has really thick and long hair... a recipe for sharing the nasty little buggers... and then a right pain in the arse for locating and removing eggs and lice. I have started a daily routine of also searching for eggs, and just cutting out the affected strands (plus a couple more of collateral damage). I figure, she has more than enough hair that I should be just aiming for the single strand of hair if the risk is that I lose it!

The innocent victim

WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN????

We believe that this is an innocent bystander that has gotten caught up in this mess... however, if she isn't cleared of the infestation then we are back to square one. Unfortunately, she is also the much trickier one with respect to getting her to stay still... however, Peppa and Kikker are our friends! Plus, she has much less hair!

Our reward

We did the best we could... time to keep a further vigilance, more repelling spray and maybe another nuke blast next weekend! We have to also treat ourselves just in case...

However, school starts up tomorrow... and I just know that the kids are putting their heads together!

WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE PARENTS????

Oh no!!!! We had to do that once when my kids were little. And wash everything!! Like everything. And put stuff in dryer and I seem to remember that items too big to wash had to go in big plastic bags fro weeks at a time.

Such a pain!!!!

Good luck with the eradication!!

Yep... it is the brushing and combing and the constant inspection that is taking up so much time. ... and if you just miss one egg... it is back to square one!

I remember the nightmare!! It took forever!! And then, there is always that one parent who doesn't do it well enough and the whole thing starts over again.
You have my deepest sympathies! Oh, the joy of parenthood!

We have an interesting problem... there is one parent who just doesn't think it is worth doing, and just basically just refuses. I am completely stunned...

Then it is best to shave all the hair off...

Of the other girl, right?

Howdy sir bengy! wow, I'd probably just go straight to the reward! dang. You would think with all the medical advances that we would have a hair product that would repell them or kill them on contact.

Haha.... yes straight to the reward would have been a great choice...

We do have ways of killing them easily... the problem is not killing the child at the same time! Also, if you aren't thorough, there is the problem of evolution and the inheritance of limited resistance to the poisons...

wow sir bengy, this is one of those things about having kids that forces you to have patience that you would not normally have! But you have no choice so you keep your cool and do what you have to do, I salute you guys!

I am told (haven't needed to test it yet), that using a shampoo made from Tea Tree Oil can help prevent your kids getting lice. Apparently they don't like the Tea Tree Oil. I know of some parents that use a Tea Tree Oul spray on their kids hair before school as well.

Yep! We've started spraying them on the way out of the house... I've even started spraying myself, just to be sure!

Oh I hated that. My daughter had thick long hair for her age so we went with tea tree oil and the comb. My son brought the clippers to me and said 'Shave my head' I still put some tea tree oil in his shampoo just to be safe. I had to wear my hair up the whole time. I did laundry every morning before we left including all pillows.

I wish you luck @bengy. This is a task for sure.

Thanks... I'm afraid that our girl is not going to go for the shaved look! So, it is the hard path for us!

What @mariannewest said. Everything needs to be hotwashed. Sheets. Stuffed animals, clothes... and if it is too big it needs to be bagged long enough for the life cycle to be broken.

I think we should just burn the house down and move....

Seems easiest. 😉

I hope that she's already okay by now and that it won't spread to her friends or classmates.

Keeping a close watch...
